Functional Medicine

Functional medicine is an approach to healthcare that focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of illness rather than just treating symptoms. It’s based on the idea that each person is unique, and their health is influenced by a combination of genetics, environment, and lifestyle factors.

Instead of asking, “What diagnosis fits these symptoms?”, functional medicine asks, “Why are these symptoms happening, and how are they connected?”

Core Principles of Functional Medicine

(1) Patient-centred care – Looks at the whole person, not just the disease.

(2) Root cause focus – Aims to uncover underlying imbalances (hormonal, nutritional, gut health,       stress, toxins, etc.).

(3) Systems biology approach – Recognises that body systems (like digestion, immune, hormones, and brain) are interconnected

.

(4) Personalised treatment – Care is tailored to each person’s genetics, lifestyle, environment, and history.

(5) Prevention and lifestyle medicine – Emphasises nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management, and relationships as part of healing.

How it can help

Functional medicine can benefit people living with:

Chronic conditions (like diabetes, autoimmune disorders, thyroid issues, digestive problems, heart disease)

Mental health concerns (like anxiety, depression, brain fog, fatigue)

Unexplained symptoms that don’t respond well to conventional care

Prevention and wellness goals – supporting long-term health and resilience
